SPACE: THE FINAL FRONTIER

Couldn't resist the opportunity to do a Trek drawing. Someday I'm gonna do a big, epic Star Trek story. Just you wait and see.

PUNISHER by Declan Shalvey

Man, I'd LOVE to draw the Punisher, so I just HAD to contribute a piece this week. True story.

DARK KNIGHT DETECTIVE by Declan Shalvey

THIS is what I would love to do at DC, if ever given the chance.

DARK KNIGHT DETECIVE
; a crime series set in Gotham city. Not a superhero book. It would be a mix of the Batman Animated Series, Year One, Gotham Central, and The Wire. This would be a more street-level book with the emphasis on the Batman solving actual crimes, instead of fighting super-villains all the time.

Someday......

EDIT: Jordie scrapped my crappy font, and replaced it with a much nicer, and pulpier looking title.

LOOSE ENDS by Declan Shalvey

Hey folks, here's my piece for this week's Twart. It was my pick this week and I really wanted to shine the spotlight on a fantastic new comic by creators at the top of their game. I complain that when I pick up a comic I often have to pick between a good story or good art. It is tough to find a comic that is both well written AND illustrated with real vision (including some brave and innovative colouring). LOOSE ENDS is one of those books. Issue One just came out on stands. Please try and grab a copy of this truly compelling Southern/Crime/Romance story, or you can download it online from Graphicly.

Big thanks to Jordie for colouring this piece for me.

GIANT MONSTERS: STAY PUFT MARSHMALLOW MAN by Declan Shalvey

I dunno what was creepier. That relentless eerie smile as he walked through Manhattan, or the freaky squirmy face he made when being zapped. Good times.

I haven't been Twarting much. I'll try do better.

THE MARQUIS by Declan Shalvey

Snap! Handing this in JUST before the end of the week. I'm a BIG fan of Guy Davis' work and ever since I saw his Marquis Diableries blog full of Marquis fan art, I've always wanted to do one. So, thanks for giving me the excuse Francesco!

PREACHER by Declan Shalvey

Well, this was my pick so I had better damn well post.

Preacher is absolutely one of my favourite books. I would gladly recommend it to non-comic reading friends. Hell; even my mum loves Preacher.

This series opened me up to non-superhero comics. Made me appreciate westerns. Showed me that a scene with two friends talking could be far more powerful than any action sequence. It also showed me that a guy from Ireland could make it in mainstream comics. So; here's to you Preacher, for ruining my life forever!

DOOM PATROL by Declan Shalvey

God, WHY did i have to follow Fowler... ...and Salas... and Francavilla ...and Panosian ...and Johnson.

Great to have Dave aboard. His addition both makes me want to try harder... and on the other hand makes me want to give up completely.

SLIMER by Declan Shalvey

Sorry for the delay on this one... and for the lack of posting of late. Declan has been a busy boy; i swear. And *naturally* i come to comic Twart to upload my Slimer drawing and i see Chris Samnee did an even better one just before me! Dammit!

I just can't catch a break.

MAN-THING by Declan Shalvey

Messed around with this sketch a little on Photoshop. Giving the original (below) away at Forbidden Planet, Dublin tomorrow during my signing of Thunderbolts #148. Hope my fellow Twartists don't mind the self-promotion, my pick just happened to coincide with my debut Marvel work. I'd be a fool NOT to do it...

CAPTAIN MARVEL by Declan Shalvey

SHAZAM!

Never drew Captain Marvel before. Turned out alright. Messed around with turning the grey-wash to halftone and putting it on top of the colourized wash. Looks kinda interesting.

SANDMAN by Declan Shalvey

With everyone knocking it out of the park this week, I felt I had to up my game and put some thought into this one. Was originally just gonna draw the Sandman on top and keep a long vertical format, but the drawing kept changing quite naturally. Normally I plan a layout in advance but this one developed quite organically on the page.

FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER

I just HAD to twart this week. A couple of years ago i did a graphic novel adaptation of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, so am well versed in both the story and the character of Frankenstein's monster. No bolts in the temple, no square head and no electricity!

This one got out of hand; started out as a basic drawing; felt i'd blacked in too many areas so went back in with white ink, but had no clean brush handy so just used my fingers. 'Things got a little out of control', like the tag-line to a bad 80s action comedy.

NICK FURY by Declan Shalvey

I think I got a bit ahead of myself. I've been neglecting my Twart duties of late, so I jumped right on this week's pick; Nick Fury. Although, it was actually 60s Nick Fury, which i didn't *really* do. Sorry. I got confused about the rules!

This is my humble tribute to the late, great, Frank Frazetta.

Rest In Peace sir, thank you for shopwing us all how it's done, and done well.

HELLBOY by Declan Shalvey

Here's my Hellboy for this week. Cheers to Patrick for picking him; been meaning to do a decent Hellboy pick for a long time, so used this as an excuse to do it. Definitely the most work i've put in for a Twart. Given the subject matter of Hellboy i just HAD to show him in Ireland.

Fun fact, back in Ireland, my home is an hour between a castle (that i used to work in) and the above ruins of Quin Abbey. Got a little homesick doing this. Last time i drew that Abbey i think i was fourteen. Good times.

Hope ye like.

BATMAN by Declan Shalvey

Hello there. In typical boring fashion, I've picked a super-hero for this week(though he is quite pulpy too. I could draw Batman all day.

Fun fact; I drew this last week at a drink-and-draw so the greaywash; Ink and Cider.

Extra fun-fact; Chris samnee has the original, so only he knows how much i had to clean this up on photoshop.

Batman is such fun to draw; with the shadows and cape it makes it really fun to play with design and composition when drawing him. Really looking to seeing the versions all the other Twarts come up with.

Would also like to thank everyone who came up to me at C2E2 this weekenf and had such kind words to say about the Twart blog and my 28 Days Later comic. I appreciate it so much :)

HAWKMAN by Declan Shalvey

BOOM! Got to post before Francesco 'always-posts-first-on-a-Monday-cuz-i'm-so-great' Francavilla, for once.

Anyhoo, nice one to Ron who suggested the first proper superhero. This is honestly my first time drawing Hawkman, so i'm not sure if this is the right version of him or anything. Hope ye like.

BELIT by Declan Shalvey

Doing something a little out of my comfort-zone this week, it being a barbarian-type-genre thing, and i ain't the best at drawin' sexy ladies either. Probably one of my weakest Twart pieces as a result, but sure it was worth a shot.
