Jonah Hex by Ramón Pérez

the old west is one of my favourite genres to play in, right up there with sci-fi and crime noir. so when francesco suggested jonah hex for this week's twart i had too participate come hell or high water. at first i was at a loss for how to tackle the piece, composition wise as i wanted to do a full figure illustration - but the thing about hex is his face. so a close-up was necessary. in the end i decided on the mignola route; just mash it all together into one image.

the pencils were done very loose and quick as i wanted most of the work done at the inks stage. whereas with a sci-fi piece i would pencil rather tight to convey that tech accuracy the old west is all about loose brush strokes and moody blacks... well for me at least.

ready to go i hit up google for reference but all that came up was lame ass jonah hex movie snapshots. i gave up rather quickly and decided to go from memory... so if the accuracy is a bit off... meh.

for fun, i thought i'd include another western pinup i did years ago showcasing hawk, son of tomahawk and madame 44.

damn, i wanna work on an old west book.

someone hook me up.

... alright time to go out and enjoy my saturday night.

cheers.

You have a troubling habit of putting yourself on gravestones, haha.

Those are some sweet grizzled cowboy faces!

I love it. The composition is great. I like all of the vertical elements: The gravestone, the gun, the tree, the cross, the scythe, and hex himself. Absolutely fantastic.
