JOHN CARTER OF MARS by Chris Samnee

Wow. Some tough acts to follow this week. Too bad I only had time for another quickie.
Oh well. This is a sketch blog after all, right?

Great work, guys. I love and hate you all at the same time.

okay. i'm going to level with you, internet. to my eternal shame, i've never read the john carter books (unless you count some of the comics... which i don't). i have always been in love with the imagery though; so much really great stuff to sink you teeth into.

that said, this might be another week where i think it may have gotten away from me for a number of reasons (most of which would fall under the most boring kinds of cartoonist "shop-talk"; paper, ink, etc...). looking at it now i wonder if it's one of those cases where the sketch was more successful than the finished product. i'm going to put this one aside for now, but at some point in the future i may revisit it for a painting.

btw if you're going to be in the ottawa area next week please stop by the silver snail comic store on wednesday where i'll be signing the new collected edition of my (and jeff parker's) book MYSTERIUS THE UNFATHOMABLE. if you're not familiar with it i can honestly tell you, with no hyperbole whatsoever, it is simply the GREATEST BOOK EVER.

you should totally buy it and stuff...

John Carter by Ron Salas

Here's my John Carter.

John Carter and the other Edgar Rice Burroughs heroes were big parts of my childhood. Burroughs was an incredibly prolific writer and, in my opinion, there was no better writer at writing adventure novels and stories. So what if his stories were, by and large, factually inaccurate? He had a sense of action and drama that were second to none.

I probably would have picked John Carter for my topic if no one had when my turn came so I'm really glad Andy picked him. Thanks Andy!

JOHN CARTER of MARS by Andy Kuhn

For some reason unknown to me, I decided to scan this piece
when it was half done, and fool around with it in photoshop.
I've posted both versions for you to dig.
John Carter of Mars.....I picked him 'cause I love him!
I was introduced to the character through the 70's marvel comics
version, drawn by Gil Kane, and inked by Rudy Nebres.
If you've never seen that, look it up. It's beautiful work.
Can't wait for the movie! There needs to be a new comic book too.
Maybe with yours truly drawing it. :)
I had a blast making this drawing.
Thanks for looking!

Thank you so much to Andy for picking up yet another Pulp character: I am definitely in my element with these choices :)
Inspired by the old Gold Key covers, here's my take on John Carter of Mars :)
Hope you guys enjoy it as much I enjoyed to draw it :)

Cheers,
Francesco

Clara de Noche by Ron Salas

Sorry, I've been neglecting my Twartian duties lately. I'm going to get John Carter in 'cause he's ca character I've been waiting to do since we started this thing.
Done with markers and a dash of Photoshop.

CLARA de NOCHE by Nathan Fairbairn

I knew as soon as Mike told us that this week's twart would be Clara de Noche that my piece would feature her and her son, Pablito. Their relationship is the only one of any value in any of the Clara stories I've ever read. It's what saves the strip from being pure objectification. It brings some humanity to the character.

This was supposed to be much more involved, with a crowd of drooling jerks in the background ogling Clara, but I got laz ... er ... I felt the piece didn't need it.

So... Yeah.
