HACK/SLASH by Steve Bryant

I love Tim Seeley's Hack/Slash. It's a terrific blend of horror and humor, with a dash of science fiction around the edges. Throw in a compelling female lead, and her equally compelling man-child monster partner, and you've got a cool-as-hell pop-culture comic book confection.

It's a bunch of stuff that I love but never get to draw, so I thought it would make for a fun Twart.

I realized after the fact that I drew Cassie's hair over the wrong eye, so I apologize to Tim for that one!

My Twartwork is available to purchase here.

MAN-THING by Steve Bryant

Again, the last guy to post...

I couldn't miss a chance to draw Man-Thing, though! I love drawing swamps and trees and drippy Spanish Moss. And it's always fun to do some drybrush.

Kudos to Dec for the excellent pick (and have you picked up his work on Marvel's Thunderbolts yet? You should; it's awesome.).

BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN by Steve Bryant

Wow. I've been away for a few weeks (again!) and am stunned by the work generated by my fellow Twartists—I'm sorry for being quiet on the list and on the blog since a few weeks prior to SDCC, but continue to be amazed and inspired by everything you guys draw and paint (posted to the list and posted to the blog). You guys are my heroes.

Okay, on to this week's Twart...Andy's edict was simple:

"please feel free to interpret shelley's monster in any setting past, present, or future, or do a drawing of any character inspired by the original, from frankenstein jr, to the franken-hooker! i guess my point is, go nutty! good luck, and may god have mercy on your souls."

Like a bunch of these guys, I have a soft spot for the big guy—especially as portrayed by Boris Karloff. But I have even more affection for James Whale's 1935 sequel, The Bride of Frankenstein.

Big thanks to Andy for picking such a cool topic!

HARVEY PEKAR TRIBUTE by Mr. Hawthorne

Harvey was a giant of our humble medium and I'm proud to have worked with him, if only briefly.

There are some details of Harvey's burial over on Comics Beat. If Harvey and his work touched you in some way please consider donating a little money to his wife Joyce Brabne. The money will help defray the costs of Harvey's burial. Donations can be Paypal'ed to HPEKAR@aol.com.

I will also be selling this piece of art and donating all the money to Harvey's widow. Please e-mail me if you're interested - mhawthorne AT thinktankcomics.com

The THING by Mr. Hawthorne

I didn't finish my THING either. Here's my place holder, an older piece from my blog, till I get it finished.

Edit - I inked Ramon's THING sketch as my entry for that subject. Hope he doesn't mind.

Mike

THE THING by Steve Bryant

Excuse me while I whip out my Thing...

I wanted to do something with the Yancy Street Gang, but Mr. Kuhn already rocked that one, so I opted to humiliate the Mole Man instead.

If I can self-promote for a second, please check out the Kickstarter campaign to fund my book, Athena Voltaire.

Ooops! I just read what next week's Twart is--one of my all-time favorite characters! Gotta get to work!

(One of the nice things about Twarting near the end of the week? Being able to add in all of the crazy tags that already exist.)

BATMAN by Steve Bryant

I haven't Twarted in a while—some personal issues and the Kickstarter campaign for my book, Athena Voltaire, have had me scrambling. Thankfully, it looks like everything is settling down.

Big thanks to Declan for his Twart choice—I hope to catch up on the Twarts I've started but not yet finished from previous weeks...

Clara de Noche by Steve Bryant

Kudos to Mike for picking Clara! I was completely unfamiliar with the character, so it was a pleasant learning experience — any time I'm introduced to more work by Jordi Bernet is a good thing!

I know that Clara was based on Bettie Page, but since I included Betty (Cliff Secord's girlfriend, also based on Miss Page) in my Rocketeer Twart, I wanted to change up the facial structure for this one and went with a more heart-shaped face. Hopefully, the character still comes through.

Johnny Recon by Steve Bryant

My apologies to Mitch for the lateness of this Twart. Johnny Recon is a terrific character and I had a blast playing around with this piece (which is my clumsy nod to Al Williamson, Wally Wood and Frank Frazetta).

If you want to see more Johnny (and believe me, you DO want to see more), you can make a big difference by contributing to Scott Dillon and Mitch Gerads' Johnny Recon Kickstarter campaign. It's money well-spent.

The Black Beetle by Steve Bryant

I'm sneaking this one in under the wire. After having been Twartless for two consecutive weeks, I wanted to try something special for Francesco's Black Beetle and decided to work up a full-color magazine cover.

I struggled with it , remembering that I absolutely suck when it comes to color. In the end, I went with what I'm comfortable with and opted for a b/w version of the piece.

While trying to develop a theme for the piece, I googled a bunch of pulps and found that "Satan" pops up a lot and the character of "Sister Satan" just made me laugh (although the adventure's title probably owes as much to Stan Lee as it does to the pulps).

A big thanks to Francesco for letting me have so much fun with such a terrific character.

BLACK BEETLE by Mr.Hawthorne

Francesco's pulp comic work is classic. Simple as that.

Francesco gave us an early heads up to his selection. SO, last week I started a digitally painted version of the piece below. I got hit with some deadline stuff, and wouldn't be able to finish that painted version, so I started an inked version.

I got the above about 2/3's done when I saw that Tom, being the brilliant bastard that he is, had a VERY similar idea to what I had begun. :)

So I did this one.

Enjoy.

THE ROCKETEER by Steve Bryant

Aside from my own creations, the Rocketeer is one of my favorite characters to draw. So it probably came as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I'd choose good ol' Cliff Secord as my pick for Comic Twarting this week. My work certainly owes a considerable debt to Dave Stevens, and this piece is my own clumsy way of acknowledging that debt.

I'm humbled to be a part of this group, and excited to draw with these guys...

(My pencils for this piece are over at my blog.)

ROCKETEER by Mr. Hawthorne

Lets start this shit off.

Dedicated to Dave Stevens. Hope I learn to fly as high, and as well, as you did.
