BATMAN by Mr. Hawthorne

Best,
Mike

Finally! Sorry it's been so long since I twarted. I unashamedly admit I borrowed my color scheme from the wonderful Francesco Francavilla.

Cheers!

BATMAN by Mitch Gerads

I'm baaaaAAACCCKKKKK!

I've been sequestered away the last few weeks trying to meet deadlines for JOHNNY RECON #2 to debut at Springcon so I've been forced to take a few weeks off from the Twart blog.

It wasn't easy.

John Carter of Mars, Dan Dare, Johnny Quest, HAWKMAN! Then Declan went and picked Batman. Somehow I found the strength to carry on before, but the day I pass up a chance to draw Batman is the day I hang it all up.

So thanks, Declan, for pulling me out of deadline obscurity. I'll have to buy you a drink. Irish people still drink, right?

BATMAN (and Poison Ivy) by Chris Samnee

I've never made it a secret that I'd kill to work on a Bat title. I absolutely love drawing Batman.
I was lucky enough to handle art chores on a Poison Ivy short story, written by Simon Spurrier, for the Batman 80 Page Giant a while back but I've still got the itch to do more.

Excellent subject suggestion, Declan. :D

Oh, and here are the pencils for the above sketch.

Thank you for this week's pick, Dec: Batman is one of my all time favorites :)
Hope you guys dig it :)

Cheers,
Francesco

Edit: I was working on a little bat-strip but since I am pretty packed for some time now and I am not sure when I can get to it, I will just post here the two panels I've done so far ;)

BATMAN by Declan Shalvey

Hello there. In typical boring fashion, I've picked a super-hero for this week(though he is quite pulpy too. I could draw Batman all day.

Fun fact; I drew this last week at a drink-and-draw so the greaywash; Ink and Cider.

Extra fun-fact; Chris samnee has the original, so only he knows how much i had to clean this up on photoshop.

Batman is such fun to draw; with the shadows and cape it makes it really fun to play with design and composition when drawing him. Really looking to seeing the versions all the other Twarts come up with.

Would also like to thank everyone who came up to me at C2E2 this weekenf and had such kind words to say about the Twart blog and my 28 Days Later comic. I appreciate it so much :)

Jonny Quest's DR. ZIN and BANDIT, by Nathan Fairbairn

I had already started the pencils on this early in the week, but then Mr. Hawthorne posted his awesome piece, and I felt totally redundant. So I left it awhile, hoping some better idea would come to me. And plenty did, but they all would have been WAY harder to draw than a picture of a dude holding a dog. Plus, as I said, I'd already started this ... and I'm super lazy, er, I mean busy ... so ... yeah.

I call this piece "ZIN WIN."

JONNY QUEST by Francesco Francavilla

Belit

Cool pick, Mr Samnee :D
I wish I had more time so to fully render a chopped out forest in the bg but I am very short on time this week.
Hope you guys dig it anyway and dig the new Sentry-bot :)

Dedicated to Mr Toth.

Cheers,
Francesco

Jonny Quest's DR. ZIN by Mr. Hawthorne

Since everyone is focused on Jonny and his crew, I figured I'd give the bad guys some of my time. I give you Dr. Zin.

Best,
Mike

Jonny Quest by Chris Samnee

So excited my week to pick has finally rolled around! Jonny Quest has been my favorite cartoon since I was a kid. It's really a perfect show!

This was all done in brush to change things up a bit. I rarely work solely in brush anymore because it takes longer, but I couldn't resist taking a little extra time on my pal Jonny! Hope you enjoy!

JONNY QUEST by Evan Shaner

Way to go and pick one of my favorite cartoons of all time, Chris. Not to mention some of those comics Doug Wildey did. I haven't drawn Jonny and the gang in a while and this was a blast, especially the Lizard Man.

JONNY QUEST by Andy Kuhn

Jonny Quest was hands down my favorite cartoon when I was a kid.
I really wish I had more time this week, but C2E2 is looming.
I'll be at ARTIST ALLEY table B6 all weekend.
If you're going to the show, stop by and say howdy!
Dig yourselves!

HAWKMAN by Andy Kuhn

Thanks to Ron Salas for this weeks choice of Twarts, Hawkman.
I am a HUGE Joe Kubert fan. His run on that book is legendary.
I'm no Joe K. (clearly), but here's my version of the Hawkmiester.
Thanks for looking.

HAWKMAN by Ron Salas

Here's my Hawkman.
Since it's my week I thought I'd do something different with it.

HAWKMAN by Chris Samnee

My Hawkman sketches always show him in a pretty sour mood. I think, after years of growing up with a falconer for a father, my frustration with birds of prey may have bled over onto our guy Carter Hall here. Sorry buddy. I still think you're a great character... it's just the creatures that you get your namesake from that I have a problem with ;P

Oh, and here's a shot of my Pop, lookin' all badass with one of his bird pals :)

HAWKMAN by Urbanbarbarian

Alright, here's my quick Hawkman sketch! I love this character and wish I could of put more effort into a finished piece instead of just a head shot. Nevertheless, his overall design is so cool that I'm inspired to draw him some more. Maybe I'll start a Hawkman series of blog posts on www.urbanbarbarian.com

HAWKMAN by Francesco Francavilla

Belit
(click on the above image for a REALLY larger view)

What can I say: I LOVE drawing this guy :D
Thanks to Ron Salas for picking it as topic for this week.

I did a couple of rough when I heard the topic: I am gonna post those later on my blog.

Hope you guys dig it :)

Cheers,
Francesco

HAWKMAN by Declan Shalvey

BOOM! Got to post before Francesco 'always-posts-first-on-a-Monday-cuz-i'm-so-great' Francavilla, for once.

Anyhoo, nice one to Ron who suggested the first proper superhero. This is honestly my first time drawing Hawkman, so i'm not sure if this is the right version of him or anything. Hope ye like.

BELIT by Urbanbarbarian

Since Belit was my choice for the week, I'm glad I snuck in my illustration before Monday! Obviously I modeled my version after the great John Buscema's design. Hard to improve on a master like him! Thanks to all the Twartists for contributing! Even my motorcycle had a personalized Belit license plate, so I really got a kick out of seeing everyone's artistry! A better week I could not ask for!

BELIT by Ron Salas

I guess I didn't get the jump on this after all. Oh well. At least it's not late.

I know the standard depiction of Belit is with the fur one-piece but I don't really like outfit so I went with a different approach. This outift is equally nonsensical for a pirate queen as the fur dress but it makes more sense to me. You guys be the judge.

BELIT by Andy Kuhn

Thanks Dan Panosian for making Belit this weeks Twart.
It's not a character I would have thought of, but she is badass!
I had plans for a more elaborate piece,
but it just wasn't in the cards. This will have to do.
Thanks for looking!

BELIT by Declan Shalvey

Doing something a little out of my comfort-zone this week, it being a barbarian-type-genre thing, and i ain't the best at drawin' sexy ladies either. Probably one of my weakest Twart pieces as a result, but sure it was worth a shot.

BELIT by Chris Samnee

Ahoy Twarties! Hope ye enjoy me interpretation of Robert E. Howard's Belit. Arrrrrhh!

BELIT by Evan Shaner

I couldn't stand not posting here on the Twart for another second, so I took some time out last night and put this together. I figured since Francesco didn't do a cover this week it'd be okay if I did. I'll admit I'm not very familiar with the character or a whole lot of the Conan world, but an image search came up with a bunch of John Buscema drawings, which is enough for me.

I still don't have a scanner, but hopefully it won't take me this long to post here again.

BELIT by Francesco Francavilla

Belit

Here's BELIT, Queen of the Black Coast, subject of this week's Twarts.
Many thanks to Dan Panosian for bringing the ladies back into the game ;)

Keeping it simple in B/W this week (kinda short on time) and, as promised, no cover treatment! ;)

Hope you guys enjoy it nevertheless :)

Cheers,
Francesco

Archie by Nathan Fairbairn

Nah, this isn't some horny teenage fantasy of Veronica running off to have hot lesbian sex with Betty. I just always thought it was stupid how these two clever and smoking hot girls would let a tool like Archie (or any guy, for that matter) string them along. Even as a kid, I always expected the next story to be the one where the girls decide to be friends and tell Archie to go screw.

Archie by Ramón Pérez

okay, it's sunday night and i'm halfway there.

i was hoping to get this done before the week was out, but i was a guest at the new toronto wizard world this weekend which put an end to that thought. however i will try to ink it up before the end of next week and append it to this post.

unlike my fellow twarters i wanted to keep the classic feel of archie but render it more akin to the the newspaper strips of the era like juliet jones by stan drake. i also went so far as to steal a piece of americana by using a composition from a classic norman rockwell image which i have included bellow...

ARCHIE by Chris Samnee

In keeping with the "edgy" Archie theme we've got going this week, I've hidden a joint somewhere in this drawing. See if you can find it!

Scroll down for the answer.

It's in his desk! ;)

ARCHIE by Mr. Hawthorne

The entire gang is here, represented in one way or another. "No-Prize" to whoever can figure out the back story behind this. ;)

Oh, and you'll also notice a couple of nods to Andy's piece :)

best,
Mike

PS - Before anyone calls me on it, I KNOW that a state pen. would never allow someone that close the fence where they can reach inmates. Trust me, I know. Used my artistic license, so sue me.

EDIT: I posted the made up back story to this piece over on my blog. Thanks!

No cover next week, I promise! ;)

Hope you guys dig it :)

EDIT: I just posted the original rough sketch and a few notes about the making of this cover over at my Pulp Sunday Blog: check it out, if you like that kind of things :)

Cheers,
Francesco
